Introducing Threads: A New Text-Based Sharing Method
The Instagram team recently released Threads, a new app for joining online discussions and sending text updates.
Posts can be up to 500 characters long, contain links, images, and videos up to five minutes long, and you log in using your Instagram account.

The Instagram team's text-sharing app, Threads, was just unveiled by Mark Zuckerberg in its first iteration. Whether you're a creator or just a casual poster, Threads provides a brand-new, distinct location for in-the-moment updates and open dialogue. We are striving to integrate Threads with the open, interoperable social networks that we think can influence how the internet develops in the future.
Billion-plus users connect on Instagram to share pictures and videos. In order to create a joyful and inspiring environment where you can share your ideas, our goal with Threads is to take what Instagram does best and apply it to text. With Threads, you can connect with friends and creators who share your interests, including those you follow on Instagram and elsewhere, much like on Instagram. Additionally, you can make advantage of our current set of user and safety controls.
Participate in the Discussion from Instagram
Start using Threads right away by logging in with your Instagram account. You can modify your profile exclusively for Threads while keeping your Instagram username and authentication.
When a user joins Threads, they are automatically put into a private profile if they are under 16 (or under 18 in some countries). On Instagram, you can decide to follow the same accounts you already do to locate new users who share your interests. Threads has access to all of Instagram's essential accessibility features, including screen reader support and AI-generated image explanations.
On Threads, threads submitted by users you follow and suggested content from up-and-coming authors are both displayed in your feed. Links, images, and 5-minute movies can all be included in posts, which can have a maximum character count of 500. A Threads post can be quickly shared to your Instagram story or as a link on any other platform of your choice.
Turn off the clamour
We designed Threads with features that encourage empowering, fruitful conversations. Within Threads, you have control over who may mention you or respond to you. Similar to Instagram, you can add hidden words to your threads to exclude comments that contain particular phrases. By pressing the three-dot menu, you can unfollow, block, restrict, or report a profile on Threads. Any profiles you've blocked on Instagram will also be blocked on Threads.

Interoperable Networks-compatible
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the organisation in charge of the open standards that drive the modern web, established ActivityPub as the open social networking protocol. We soon intend to make Threads compatible with ActivityPub. This will enable new forms of connections that are now not available on most social apps by enabling Threads to communicate with other applications that accept the ActivityPub protocol, such as Mastodon and WordPress. Tumblr and other platforms have discussed future intentions to support the ActivityPub protocol.
Our goal is to collaborate with ActivityPub to provide you the choice to stop using Threads and move your content to another service. We're devoted to offering you more control over your audience on Threads. In order to usher in a new era of diverse and interconnected networks, our objective is that users of compatible apps will be able to follow and engage with users on Threads without having a Threads account, and vice versa. If you have a public profile on Threads, this means that other apps can access your postings, enabling you to easily reach new audiences. You could approve users on Threads who wish to follow you and engage with your content if you have a private profile.
Open social networking protocols have several advantages besides just allowing users to follow one another.
